Le Tournoi de la Ville Platte

This joust or tournament requires speed, agility and accuracy on the part of both the rider and his mount. The sport which was originally introduced in the 1800s, was run until the late 1890s, when it was abandoned. It was revived in 1952 by a group of Veterans as part of their July 4th celebration and has continued as such since that time. A rider in the Tournoi (French for tournament) carries a long, slender lance which he uses. to put through a small iron ring as he races his horse around a quarter-mile circular track. Seven rings which represent seven enemies of cotton are suspended from post along the track. Riders make three rounds (or heats) to decide the winner.  Le Tournoi is held
the weekend of the Louisiana Cotton Festival on Sunday afternoon
