Mardi Gras

Mamou is the site of this Cajun country-style Mardi Gras celebration. Men on horseback gather in their colorful costumes and masks for a traditional Mardi Gras run. Going house to house, chasing chickens, dancing, carousing and entertaining in exchange for food for the big gumbo. Every evening, the streets are filled to capacity with Cajun bands, food and dancing. Here, you truly see the Cajun culture, heritage and its people. Festivities begin the first weekend prior to Ash Wednesday and continue through "Fat Tuesday".
